Warm-up sets: how many and how heavy?

A good warm-up gets you ready to lift heavy without tiring you out. For most lifts, one or two lighter sets are enough.

A simple rule

Before the first heavy exercise of the day, do a set at about half your working weight for 8–10 easy reps. For very heavy lifts, add a second set at around 75% for 3–5 reps.

In MaxLift

When a plan’s target starts with 1+ (like 1+3 × 10), the first row is marked W for warm-up. MaxLift suggests half your working weight for it. Warm-up sets are logged like any other, but they don’t lower your estimated max.

Do you need to warm up every exercise?

Usually not. Once the big lift is done, the muscles are warm; later exercises for the same area can start with working sets.
